Adult Reading Lessons: Alphabet Letter I

Adult learners use this page to explore the sounds each alphabet letter can make. Using IPA symbols helps prepare learners for using a dictionary. Word drills provide structured reading practice using lists of words grouped by sound and take learners on the next step in their reading journey.

Goal: recognize and name the letter I; hear each distinct sound letter I makes; voice those sounds.

The letter I is yet another vowel. Without I, I couldn't tell you a thing. It's true. I is a simple vowel with few occasional sounds. Of interest, the consonant endings gn and ght form a long vowel i sound, as in sign, light, and height but not eight. It is also a subject in a sentence which refers to one's self as in: I have a dog; I go to the store; I love pizza.

The Vine

James Thomson. 1834–1882

THE wine of Love is music,
And the feast of Love is song:
And when Love sits down to the banquet,
Love sits long:

Sits long and arises drunken,
But not with the feast and the wine;
He reeleth with his own heart,
That great, rich Vine.
