Evidence to the Contrary

Suggestions for research by an AI tool.

One of the hardest parts of critical thinking is actively searching for evidence that challenges a claim you are examining. You can do this research yourself, ask a librarian for help, or use an AI tool to help generate leads and questions.

Searching for evidence to the contrary may seem arduous at times. One approach is to use an AI tool to help you get started. (AI tools can help surface possibilities, but they do not replace reading original studies, checking sources, or exercising judgment.)

Below outlines what an AI tool could do:

An AI tool can help you "steelman" the opposing view (meaning, finding the strongest possible version of the counter-argument) rather than just looking at the one side presented in your article.

How an AI tool can help you find "the other side":

  1. Finding the Scientific Counter-Consensus: If an article cites a study, an AI tool can search for rebuttals, meta-analyses, or "failed replications" that challenge those specific findings.
  2. Identifying Alternative Explanations: If an article claims "X causes Y," an AI tool can help you find research that suggests Z might actually be the cause, or that the relationship is merely a coincidence.
  3. Contextualizing Data:  An AI tool can look for data that the article might have "cherry-picked." For example, if an article says "Crime rose 20% last year," an AI tool can help you find if it’s still down 50% over the last decade.
  4. Identifying Stakeholder Bias:  An AI tool can help you see how different groups view the same evidence (e.g., how an environmentalist vs. an economist might interpret the same land-use study).

How to get the most out of an AI tool:

To get started, you can simply paste a link or a specific claim. It helps if you ask in one of these ways:

Sometimes evidence to the contrary is easy to find; other times it takes patience and deeper digging. You may be fortunate to find that others have already published rebuttals or critiques that report conflicting evidence. If this step becomes overwhelming, pause and return when it’s useful.
